According to data from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the mutual fund industry saw addition of 17.56 lakh folios to reach 6.49 crore folios in Nov 2017. Out of the total folio additions in Nov, 11.06 lakh folios were in equity funds (excluding ELSS) taking the total number of equity fund folios to 3.85 crore. The increase in equity fund folios can be attributed to upbeat market sentiment and increased awareness of mutual funds as an investment tool. The Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) category (excluding gold ETF) witnessed a 61.26% increase in folios to 8.64 lakh folios in Nov. Balanced funds saw folio addition of 2.08 lakh folios in Nov. Equity Linked Saving Scheme (ELSS) category also saw a commendable increase in folios as investors are investing in ELSS as a tax-saving instrument. The category has witnessed an addition of around 1.19 lakh mutual fund folios in Nov.
